5 Sustainable Activities for Autumn

5 Sustainable Activities for Autumn

Autumn is a beautiful season, and there are so many ways to have fun as well as keep energy costs down in your home. Check out our article of suggestions for sustainable Autumn fun!

5 Sustainable Activities for Autumn

The leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping, and the evenings are drawing in; this can mean only one thing: Autumn has arrived! While the colder months invite us indoors more often, they’re the perfect time to make simple, sustainable changes at home. From energy-smart habits to creative reuse, here are five fun, budget-friendly activities to help you enjoy the season while making your home and appliances work more efficiently.

1. Autumn Strolls for Eco Inspiration

Taking time out of your day to explore nature is a brilliant way to enjoy the season, and it’s completely free. But bring your walk home with you. Use your strolls to scout your neighbourhood for ideas on weatherproofing, insulation, and appliance-friendly habits. Notice which homes use draught excluders, thick curtains or porch plants to buffer heat loss. When you return, you can apply tiny adjustments to make your appliances, like your heating system, work less hard. A cosy walk becomes inspiration for a more energy-efficient home.

2. Appliance Friendly Pumpkin Cooking

A pumpkin-carving competition is a classic autumn delight. But this year, make it doubly sustainable by using every part of the pumpkin and by cooking wisely. Roast pumpkin seeds in an air fryer or energy-efficient oven setting and turn leftover pulp into soups or bakes. Batch-cooking pumpkin dishes and storing them in your fridge or freezer lets your appliances run more efficiently by staying fuller, while reducing food waste and saving money. One pumpkin can be an entire week of autumn comfort food.

3. Use Nature to Decorate for Autumn

Instead of buying disposable autumn décor, forage for branches, leaves and acorns to create natural centrepieces and wreaths. These additions make your home feel seasonal, and they also encourage you to rely less on artificial lighting and electric décor. Pair your nature-inspired decorations with warm-toned LED bulbs or low energy lamps to create a cosy ambience without pushing appliances into overdrive. You get atmosphere, sustainability, and a home that feels grounded in the season.

4. Build a Homemade Scarecrow

This activity is wonderful for kids and equally great for your household footprint. Build your scarecrow from items you already have. Worn-out clothes, old socks, newspapers you’ve been meaning to recycle. You can even display it indoors as part of your seasonal décor, reducing the temptation to buy single-use ornaments or battery-powered Halloween decorations. It’s a creative reminder that reusing materials at home reduces waste and lowers the demand on resources tied to manufacturing and shipping new products.

5. Keep Warm Efficiently at Home

With the cost of living and energy bills rising, autumn is the ideal season to adopt smart home habits. Small changes can make a big difference:

• Use your heating system efficiently by setting timers rather than leaving it running.

• Close curtains before sunset to trap heat so radiators and heaters don’t have to work overtime.

• Add draught excluders or homemade doorstoppers to keep rooms warm and reduce heat loss.

• Layer up with your favourite autumn sweaters and throws before turning up the thermostat.

• Use appliances like tumble dryers sparingly, taking advantage of breezy autumn days for air-drying when possible.

These tricks help you stay warm, and ensure your appliances run more efficiently and last longer. We hope this helps and you have a wonderful. Sustainable Autumn!

How to Get the Most Out of Your Smart TV

How to Get the Most Out of Your Smart TV

Smart TVs have all sorts of features you can make use of, so here’s our guide on how to optimise your experience!

How to Get the Most Out of Your Smart TV

Smart TVs have been on the market for a while now and they have become a mainstay in our homes, bringing us on-demand entertainment alongside our myriad of satellite channels. different modes, connectivity features, and more. so let’s take a look at how you can make the most of your Smart TV in your home.

Customise the Home Screen

On your Smart TV, there is such a huge selection of apps to download and use that you can’t possibly use them all frequently. This is why it’s a great idea to customize your home screen with the apps you use the most and widgets you want on there like the weather etc. This allows for a personalized and highly convenient TV experience with easy access to all your favorite streaming services and apps.

Control Your TV from Your Phone

Getting sick of losing your controller? Now you can control your TV through your phone, so your controller is always on you. This makes it nice and easy to control your TV and even improves the control interface.

Connect to Virtual Assistants

So many TVs come with built-in assistants now like Alexa, Google Assistant, ThinQ and Bixby. you can set these up and get to the apps you want to use without faffing about on any sort of controller or getting stuck in menus. Some TVs will even connect to your phone’s assistant or your Alexa independently.

Check out Ambient Mode

Ambient Mode on your Smart TV is a mode that allows you to use your TV like a piece of ambient art, setting a mood in your home. A popular setting for this is the fake fire, creating a snug mood for your living room while your TV isn’t being used. You can use it to display art, chilled pictures, or even as a photo gallery.

Use HDMI 2.1

HDMI 2.1 is the best HDMI connector to use as it can give you a framerate bump up to around 120 frames per second, meaning you’ll be watching much smoother images. You’ll especially see the difference if you love watching sports and fast-paced shows. This pushes the limits of your watching experience and allows you to watch things the best they can be.

Use Gaming Modes

Gaming mode will really optimize your TV for when you’re connected to your console and want to fire up some games. TVs will now have HDR capability, high frame rates, and 4K displays are all going to perform well compared with TVs that don’t make use of this technology. You’ll see the benefit even on the newest consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. You can even connect your games controller to your TV in lots of cases and it’ll be recognized as a controller for the TV, bringing you full integration.

Stream Your Own Content

Often when you’re at home you can get bored of the choices the streaming services give you, as they tend to suggest things similar to what you’ve watched before. This can be solved by streaming your own content through something like a USB 3.0 stick with your files on there, this adds versatility to your TV and can provide a nice break from the regular content you watch on your streaming apps

How to Buy a TV: All you Need to Know

TVs are unanimous in homes across the world, we love to watch all sorts of things, and when your TV gets a bit old, it’s high time to start searching for a new one to bring some of that joy back to watching your favourite things!

Types of Television

Televisions come in various types and have different features depending on the type. Here is a breakdown of LCD, OLED, and QLED TVs to help you understand what’s best for you.

LCD TVs

LCD TVs use backlighting that shines on liquid crystals to display the images on your screen. These TVs are less expensive to make than other types, so they are more common than the others too.

OLED TVs

OLED TVs (Organic LED) are thought of as the best for colour quality and movement, these TVs are expensive and can get to prices in the multiple thousands depending on what size you’re looking for. Instead of using a backlight, each tiny bulb lights itself, which is why the image is so good with these TVs.

QLED TVs

These TVs are essentially a response from Samsung to the OLED TV type, claiming to produce colours and contrast as good as OLED TVs. They work more similarly to LCD screens though as they still have a backlight, the only difference is that instead of a layer of liquid crystals they use quantum dots to produce the image.

4K TVs have now taken over the market and are widely available in many sizes, so it’s unlikely you’ll want to buy a Full HD TV in today’s market. They start at around £350 and have a much better display due to the number of pixels on the screen.

TV Pricing

TVs can get really expensive, especially if you’re buying a brand new model, but once they’ve been around for a while you’re likely to be able to pick up a 4K model for as little as £300/£350.

With Prices being reasonable for 4K TVS provided you wait as little, why would you want to spend more – and what would you get for the extra spend? Well spending more than £700 you’ll start to get sleeker design, smoother displays and Smart TV capability. Also of course the price increases if you want a larger screen size too, naturally.

Features to Look for When Buying a TV

Smart TVs are helpful as you can get on-demand streaming apps like Netflix, Prime Video and BBC iPlayer. Some TVs come with voice control which is helpful and eliminates the need for a controller. HDR is also a great feature if you really want to improve your picture quality. The contrast can be greatly improved in TVs with HDR. Freeview Play is also great for catching up on shows you’ve missed. If you’d like to record shows too, you can look for a TV with PVR capabilities. All of these features will push the price up, but depending on your needs, they may be worth the extra spend.

TV Sizes

TV screens are getting bigger and bigger, and bigger screens are getting more accessible to everyone as production costs get cheaper.

You won’t get 4K TVs at the 32-inch and smaller sizes, as they aren’t big enough to display the extra picture quality. You can still get TVs with smart capabilities though so these are a great option for bedroom TVs.

40-43-inch TVs are a popular size as they have a bit of everything. You can have 4K TVs, smart capabilities, and the price points aren’t bad at all. Saying that, if you want the latest technology, it’s better to go with a larger screen as the manufacturers air towards larger screen sizes for their new technology, to show it off in all of its glory. This is the way the market is going.

49-55-inch TVs as mentioned earlier are what producers prefer to put their effort into with new technology. Pretty much all TVs in today’s market at these sizes will be 4K and have the smart capability, as well as supporting HDR pictures too. These sizes will have all the bells and whistles and you’ll find a range of options depending on what you’re looking for at this size.

65-inch plus TVs are huge, but largely work the same as the previous size bracket. They’ll have all the features you can find on 49-55-inch TVs but will cost more due to the larger size.

When Should I Buy a New TV?

It is usually best to wait sometime after TVs release, as the prices can drop significantly. This is usually a good few months after January to April. Also, Look for large discounts at times like the New year sales and Black Friday, you’ll be able to get a large amount off in these sales so be vigilant!

Best TV Brands

There are a lot of brands to choose from in the TV market, but most consumers will get either a Samsung, a Panasonic, an LG, or a Sony TV. Samsung and LG are the most popular and offer lots and lots of choices at every price point, so these two are always a safe bet. Sony and Panasonic are behind these two, but not by much, and still have huge ranges to choose from. They may offer fewer TVs at smaller sizes though such as 32-inch. A rising star is Hisense, a Chinese brand. These TVs tend to be cheaper than the top brands but try to offer similar specifications, so if you’re on a budget and are looking for a high-quality TV, this may be a good option for you.

Are Curved TVs Worth It?

In short – not particularly. From the outside, it seems great, but research shows that the effects of a curved TV are only really felt when you’re dead in front of the screen. People rarely watch TV from straight on, so this seems like a bit of a waste of money. Due to this, the feature is becoming less and less popular and only a Samsung still sells them today. They are also more difficult to put on a wall, so bear that in mind. Curved TVs are still great machines, so if you do want one then go for it, just be aware it may cost a little more, for not too much gain.

Can I Fix My TV?

Recently there have been laws passed to make it easier for TVs to be repaired. This helps with electronic waste and also makes it cheaper for the consumer. TV producers now have to make parts available for several years after the TV has been on the market, and this goes for all price points and sizes of TV. So yes, you should be able to repair your TV!

Ethical Appliance Care

Ethical Appliance Care

Ever wondered about the ethical landscape of the appliance care industry? Well take a look at our deep dive here for the good , the bad and the ugly of appliance care!

Ethical Appliance Care: What Households Deserve

When it comes to protecting the appliances we rely on every day, not all care plans are created equal. The appliance care market, like any service industry, has its fair share of both ethical and less ethical practices. For households, the difference can mean peace of mind or frustration and wasted money. At Zest, we believe transparency and fairness should be at the heart of every plan.

The Unethical Side of Appliance Care

Unfortunately, some practices in the market put profit ahead of customers. These can include:

Overcomplicated Contracts

Lengthy terms and conditions written in confusing language, making it hard for households to understand what’s actually covered.

Hidden Exclusions

Some providers promote “comprehensive” cover, only for customers to discover that key parts or types of breakdowns aren’t included when they try to make a claim.

Pressure Selling

Aggressive sales tactics, especially targeting vulnerable customers, can lead people into plans that don’t suit their needs.

Planned Obsolescence

Encouraging replacement over repair, even when a fix is possible, contributes to unnecessary costs and environmental waste.

Poor Aftercare

Long waits for repairs, unresponsive customer service, or using substandard parts all undermine the trust customers place in their provider.

These practices may keep short term profits high, but they damage the reputation of the industry and more importantly erode customer confidence. That’s without mentioning the effect on our planet that much of these practices have.

What Ethical Appliance Care Looks Like

On the other hand, there are ethical providers that are raising their standards and putting fairness first. Here are some of the practices we think providers are doing in the spirit of transparency, what they’re doing right.

Clear, Honest Cover

Customers should know exactly what is included and excluded before signingup, with no unpleasant suprises later.

Repair-First Approach

Ethical providers focus on repairing appliances whenever possible, saving customers’ money and reducing waste.

Fair Pricing

Plans should provide value, with costs that are proportional to the level of cover offered.

Respectful Service

Ethical sales companies train their teams to support households with empathy and professionalism, without pressure or misdirection.

Sustainable Practices

Encouraging repair over replacement where possible, recycling parts responsibly, and minimising waste reflects a commitment to both people and planet.

These practices may keep short term profits high, but they damage the reputation of the industry and more importantly erode customer confidence. That’s without mentioning the effect on our planet that much of these practices have.

Why It Matters

Appliance care isn’t just about convenience, it’s about trust. When a washing machine breaks down or the oven stops working, households need quick, reliable help. Ethical practices ensure customers feel supported, not exploited, and that the service they’re paying for genuinely makes life easier.

At Zest, we see ethical care as more than a business model, it’s a responsibility. By focusing on transparency, repair-first solutions, and sustainable choices, we aim to raise the bar for what households should expect from appliance care. Because looking after appliances should never come at the expense of fairness or integrity.
